OLTCC Community of Practice: Approach to Peripheral Edema in Long-Term Care

Join us for a practical and clinically focused Community of Practice session exploring the assessment and management of peripheral edema in the long-term care (LTC) setting.

In this session, Dr. George Heckman will guide participants through a structured, evidence-informed approach to evaluating lower extremity edema in LTC residents. Drawing on his extensive clinical and academic expertise, Dr. Heckman will highlight common etiologies, key assessment considerations, and pragmatic management strategies tailored to the complexities of long-term care populations.

The discussion will address:

  • Differentiating common causes of peripheral edema in LTC
  • Practical bedside assessment approaches
  • When to investigate further — and when not to
  • Management strategies that balance clinical benefit, resident comfort, and care goals

This one-credit per hour Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 1 Mainpro+ credit.
