In-Person Medical Director Course

Registration is now open for the upcoming OLTCC Medical Director Course, taking place November 27–29, 2026 at the Novotel Toronto North York (North York Centre).

Accredited for up to 22.5 Mainpro+® credits, this three-day, in-person program is designed to prepare physicians working in long-term care to lead effectively as Medical Directors. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the sector while strengthening the leadership and management capabilities required to enhance quality of care in LTC homes.

Ontario Regulation 246/22 under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 (FLTCA) requires LTC licensees to enter into written agreements with Medical Directors, including the expectation that they complete the OLTCC Medical Director Course within their first year in the role. This program also supports the ongoing education of Nurse Practitioners and other clinical healthcare professionals working in long-term care.

This course is designed for clinicians seeking to deepen their understanding of the long-term care sector, including the legislative framework under the FLTCA, and to strengthen their ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams in LTC environments. Nurse Practitioners are also encouraged to attend, as the curriculum is highly relevant to their roles as Clinical Directors in LTC.

Who should attend:

  • Current and incoming Medical Directors
  • Nurse Practitioners and clinicians working in long-term care
  • Clinicians across Canada interested in the LTC sector

Course overview:

This practice-oriented program features newly updated modules and is structured across 20 core units, providing a comprehensive understanding of long-term care operations, clinical governance, and leadership in LTC settings. Key areas include regulatory compliance, resident-centred care, risk management, team leadership, quality improvement, and inspection readiness.

Participants will also gain access to practical tools and resources to support real-world application, including templates, audit tools, decision-making frameworks, and clinical guidance to navigate the complexities of the Medical Director role.
